Spring Surf 22 March 2010

Going right at Dave's

Pete's backside right at Dave's

The spring surf season started with one memorable weekend in March. High pressure had been dominating the West Coast for a week, forcing the cold rainy weather into hiatus, and letting in the warm sunny weather. Toward the end of the week, record high temperatures were recorded in many locations.

Longboard left

Wave angle

Saturday started with a near-zero feet low tide in the morning, which is a characteristic of the spring-summer season. Winds were favorable and waves were in the fun-zone. In town, all the spots were full of watermen and waterwomen. Out of town, some breaks were overhead and still juicy. The wave angle had shifted more to the northwest, also a characteristic of the spring and summer swells. And for a big bonus, Saint Mary's Gaels beat Villanova in the NCAA college basketball tournement to make the sweet sixteen!

No fog anywhere

Sunday was also a great day in the water, with another low low tide early on. North of town the waves were breaking left and right at Dave's Place, in the North Cove and on the Main Reef. Sets were still running overhead on the outside, with most of the crew sitting on the smaller inside reef picking off the lefts. A bit of an overcast was overhead, but temperatures were still mild. No fog anywhere could be seen, and the winds held to a minimum in the early going. Too bad Cal lost to Duke in the NCAA; that would have made the weekend as sweet as could be.

Drawing a long line

Next weekend?

No pictures for this weekend; it was too much surfing to spend any time on the beach snapping the camera lens. There are a few pictures from March waves in past years, just for reference. What can the next weekend bring? Check back to these Chronicles Wednesday evening for the weekend surf forecast. And hope for the best.
