Got an interesting email from J about last week's column. Think it's worth sharing.

Hey Dogman...
So, I'm having fun identifying the rivermouth pix posted a few days ago. If it's in Dogland, then: - it sure isn't San Lorenzo - the hills to the north sure look like SC Mts., the hills to the south sure look like Monterey...and I think I even see a jetski in the background in one shot (indicating difficult access or tow-in conditions...but those look paddle-inable): So I figure Pajaro or Salinas rivermouth. - Salinas doesn't break through that often, so I'm guessing Pajaro If it isn't Dogland, then it sure looks like Santa Clara rivermouth. Ease my pain :) ... j. DM's Response
J,
Thanx for reading and taking the time to respond. Obviously a long-time DMC reader if you are aware of the name and concept of "DogLand!" I took another look at the column to find the jetski, and noticed I repeated photo 2. There is a photo 3 which didn't make it into the source for the column. You can see it in this column. You raise a good question about which river mouth this represents. I didn't name it on purpose. The real answer is "I don't know for sure!" The pix were reader submissions, and I think BwSurfRf is from the Santa Cruz area. People in these parts mean only one river when they say "Rivermouth" and that's the San Lorenzo. I am 90% certain this is where the pics were taken, but there is some interesting evidence to the contrawise:
1. Check the contour of the mountains in the background in this pic with that of the pic above:
The real Big Sur Mountains in the background.
The mountains look a bit different, don't they? The second pic, is one I took so I know those mountains are the Big Sur mountains behind Monterey.
2. All three pix in the column show awesome lefts, but no rights. Yet the Rivermouth is known primarilly for the rights, although there are some shorter lefts too.
3. I was at the Rivermouth the day after these pics were taken. Though the bouy indicators showed swell was a touch bigger than the day before, I saw only piddling little shin-slapper waves at the San Lorenzo. Here's a pic of the conditions I found:
Scene of the Rivermouth on the day after.
So your guess is as good as mine! Is your pain eased? I didn't think so. Do you know whether Santa Clara RM was going off on Jan. 18? Long time since I last surfed there.
Regards, DM Who Knows?
Whatcha' think? Which RM is the one pictured in last week's column?
CU Out There,
